A recent spate of pro-marijuana bills have been introduced in state legislatures across the country, with two making it out of their respective chambers in New York as of press time.
It’s hard to believe that it’s been less than a decade since the first states legalized medicinal use of marijuana. Even more amazing, it’s been less than five months since a majority of states have now legalized recreational use of marijuana. If that’s not a testament to how far the country has come in a relatively short time, I don’t know what is.
With the legalization of marijuana now a reality in some parts of the country and growing, Amazon has joined a growing list of companies that see the benefit of cannabis for both consumers and the economy. “We have seen a lot of interest from customers since our announcement this past fall to develop and sell related products, including pre-filled vape pens, personal care products and a variety of consumption devices,” said Amazon Vice President of Global Consumer Marketing. “We have also seen that customers are looking for unique ways to prepare and consume marijuana. We will work with manufacturers to offer an awesome selection of these products for Amazon customers.”. Clark’s blog mentions some important changes that will take place in the company’s operations. Mr. Clark began by discussing changes to the task time policy, which measures the amount of time an employee spends on the company computer. The changes are primarily based on averaging the data over a longer period of time to better assess how employees are spending their time. Dave Clark, Senior Vice President, Global Operations and General Manager, Global Consumer The second change in company policy is why the blog post made headlines in the cannabis community. Clark writes in a blog post that Amazon will change its drug testing policy and no longer test for cannabis use as part of its drug testing program. We will no longer include marijuana in our comprehensive drug testing program for all non-DOT regulated functions, and we will treat it the same as alcohol use, Clark said. A change in drug testing policy is big news for such a large and influential employer in the United States, and no doubt other companies will follow. But their support for federal legalization is even more influential. And because we know this issue is bigger than Amazon, our policy team will actively support the Marijuana Opportunity Reinvestment and Relief Act of 2021 (MORE Act), federal legislation that legalizes marijuana at the federal level, lifts criminal records and invests in affected communities, Clark said. We hope that other employers will join us and that the politicians will act quickly to pass this bill. Given Amazon’s very large influence on American business and politics, a company that supports federal legalization would likely lead other large companies down a similar path. MORE’s support for the bill signifies an increasing normalization of cannabis use and moves us closer to federal legalization. In a surprising move, Amazon has come out in support of marijuana legalization. The company has joined the Coalition for Cannabis Policy Reform, a group which aims to alter the federal scheduling of marijuana. The group has spent recent months lobbying the White House, the Drug Enforcement Administration and Capitol Hill to change cannabis laws. And while the group’s efforts have been futile thus far, Amazon’s support could mean that the tides are finally turning in favor of cannabis..
