Bio-Rad Laboratories recently announced the successful completion of AOAC International’s validation process for its Aspergillus PCR test, which it describes as a “novel quantitative PCR-based test for the rapid and accurate detection of Aspergillus species, the causative agent of a group of serious fungal infections, including invasive aspergillosis, which is a rare complication of allogenic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation.

The Aspergillus PCR test from Bio-Rad Laboratories received approval from the AOAC for use as a stand-alone test for the analysis of Aspergillus in grain and other materials where no other test is commercially available. AOAC approval is a significant industry milestone and a testament to the work that Bio-Rad has done to complete the rigorous testing and instrument validation required for this designation. According to a press release issued earlier this month, the Bio-Rad iQ-Check real-time PCR detection kit for Aspergillus has been approved by AOAC International. The test detects four different species of Aspergillus: A. flavus, A. fumigatus, A. niger and A. terreus. The detection kit covers these Aspergillus species for research in hemp flowers and hemp concentrates prepared with or without the use of solvents. The PCR detection kit has been validated by the Performance Tested Methods Program of the AOAC Research Institute. They conducted a study that found no significant difference between the PCR detection kit and the reference method. The iQ-Check Aspergillus real-time PCR kit detects Aspergillus flavus, fumigatus, niger and terreus in hemp flowers and hemp concentrates. Bio-Rad Aspergillus PCR Test Gets AOAC Approval The package was evaluated for reliability, product consistency, stability, inclusivity and exclusivity, as well as matrix studies, the press release said. Bio-Rad has also received approval and validation of its iQ-Check Free DNA Removal solution, which is part of its workflow for cannabis flower analysis. The test kit uses gene amplification and real-time PCR detection. After DNA enrichment and extraction, the assay runs its PCR technology and then the CFX Manager IDE software to automatically generate and analyze results. Bio’Rad also recently received AOAC approval for other cannabis microbial testing methods, including the iQ-Check Salmonella II, iQ-Check STEC VirX and iQ-Check STEC SerO II PCR kits.
