Since voters in Colorado and Washington passed measures legalizing small amounts of marijuana in November 2012, over a dozen states and the District of Columbia have taken action to permit medical and/or recreational marijuana use. That includes our own state of Montana, which will allow adults 21 and older to legally buy and possess up to one ounce of marijuana.

Today, the Montana state legislature voted to override a veto from Governor Steve Bullock and to pass a bill that will legalize recreational marijuana use in the state of Montana. According to the results of a poll taken before the vote, 64% of Montanans said they would vote to legalize marijuana, and 60% of voters said they “strongly support” legalization. President Donald Trump has said he will likely veto the bill, and Republicans have also expressed reservations about the measure.

The 5th. In November 2020, Montana, New Jersey, South Dakota, Arizona and Mississippi voted to legalize recreational or medical marijuana use. This week, Montana Governor Greg Gianforte signed two bills to expand the market for recreational cannabis that were passed in November: one allows for the sale of marijuana and the other for possession. From the beginning, I’ve been clear that we need to put more resources into fighting the drug epidemic that is devastating our communities, Gianforte said in a statement. By funding a full cycle of community-based substance abuse prevention and treatment programs, the HEART Foundation will provide new support for Montana residents who want to get clean, sober and healthy. A specialized drug court will also be established to oversee the eventual elimination of marijuana-related convictions, as possession of the plant is no longer considered illegal. The new cannabis laws will also protect employees from using cannabis outside of work, although employers may still prohibit cannabis use during working hours. In addition, employers can take action against employees who use cannabis outside of work if the use of cannabis begins to interfere with their ability to work.
